Love is any of a number of emotions related to a sense of strong affection^[1] and attachment. The word love can refer to a variety of different feelings, states, and attitudes, ranging from generic pleasure ("I loved that meal") to intense interpersonal attraction ("I love my husband"). This diversity of uses and meanings, combined with the complexity of the feelings involved, makes love unusually difficult to consistently define, even compared to other emotional states.

As an abstract concept, love usually refers to a deep, ineffable feeling of tenderly caring for another person. Even this limited conception of love, however, encompasses a wealth of different feelings, from the passionate desire and intimacy of romantic love to the nonsexual emotional closeness of familial and platonic love to the profound oneness or devotion of religious love.Love in its various forms acts as a major facilitator of interpersonal relationships and, owing to its central psychological importance, is one of the most common themes in the creative arts.

"愛"字在中文裡有著許多解釋，由某種事物給予人滿足（如「我愛吃这些食物」）至為了愛某些東西而願意犧牲（如愛國心、對偶結合）。其可以用來形容愛慕的強烈情感、情緒或情緒狀態。在日常生活裡，其通常指人際間的愛。可能因為其為情感之首位，所以愛是美術中普遍的主題。愛有時亦會被形容為強迫症。

愛最佳的定義可能是主動行動，以真心對待某個生命體或物體（可以是人、物品、神），使其整體得到快樂。簡而言之，愛即主動使整體得到快樂。（Thomas Jay Oord）。

愛是與生俱來的，所以可以認為是人性的特質，換言之，愛是作為人必須具備的本質之一。雖然世界各民族間的文化差異使得一個普世的愛的定義難以道明，但並非不可能成立（沙皮亞－沃爾福假設）。愛可以包括靈魂或心靈上的愛、對法律與組織的愛、對自己的愛、對食物的愛、對金錢的愛、對學習的愛、對權力的愛、對名譽的愛、對他人的愛等，數之不盡。不同人對其所接受的愛有著不同的重視程度。愛本質上是一個抽象概念，可以體驗但卻難以用言語表達。
